What Is Prenatal Massage?

Prenatal massage is therapeutic massage adapted for pregnancy. Your Registered Massage Therapist adjusts pressure, positioning, and technique to match your body and how far along you are, so every session feels comfortable.

Pregnancy asks a lot of your body. Your centre of gravity shifts, your ligaments soften, and everything from your low back to your feet adapts. At Revive Whole Body Health in St. Albert, a session gives those muscles some attention and gives you a quiet hour to breathe.

Pregnancy Massage Benefits

Many people find that regular pregnancy massage eases the tension that builds as your body changes: tightness through the low back and hips, tired legs, and sore shoulders from shifting posture. Massage also helps your nervous system settle, which can make rest a little easier when sleep gets harder to find.

Every pregnancy is different, so results vary. Your therapist will ask what is bothering you most, such as low back and hip pain, and shape the session around it.

When to Consider Massage Therapy During Pregnancy

Consider massage therapy when everyday comfort starts to slip: sitting through a workday, getting comfortable at night, or walking the dog takes more effort than it used to. It is also a good fit when you feel wound up and want an hour to unwind, or when you would like a regular check-in as your body keeps changing.

If your pregnancy is high-risk, or you are not sure massage is right for you, check with your doctor or midwife first and share their advice with your therapist. Reach out to them right away, rather than booking a massage, if you notice vaginal bleeding, sudden swelling, a severe headache, or pain, warmth, or swelling in one leg. Those signs need medical attention.

Every visit starts with a conversation about your pregnancy and anything your care provider has flagged, and you can ask to change pressure or position at any point. This page is general information and not a substitute for medical advice.

Wear something comfortable that is easy to change out of. You will be draped with a sheet, and only the area being worked on is uncovered.
Many people book pregnancy massage for low back and hip pain, and some also feel pain that travels down the leg. Tell your therapist what you feel and where, and mention it to your doctor or midwife too, since leg pain in pregnancy can have different causes.
